Earth Month 2017 with NC GreenPower

May 26, 2017

This year’s official national Earth Month campaign was all about environmental & climate literacy.

The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970 helped jump start the modern environmental movement, inspiring people worldwide to demonstrate their commitment to a healthy and sustainable world. Earth Day is just one day, but there are opportunities to get involved all month long.
For NC GreenPower this meant a month full of environmental education, energy, learning, and fun. Every year we get dozens of requests throughout the months leading up to April. Whether it’s giving presentations, attending earth events, fairs and expos, or handing out our fun color-change cups, NC GreenPower is all about helping North Carolinians learn about renewable energy and the impact they can have on a greener, cleaner state by supporting our work.

From the UNC Science Expo in Chapel Hill to the Piedmont Earth Day Fair in Winston Salem, NC GreenPower was busy! With the help of our dedicated volunteers we were able to attend 10 events in just 4 weeks, spreading the word about renewable energy and our Solar Schools Program. We want to say thank you to our volunteers for all their hard work. We really couldn’t have done it without each of you!

We kicked off this year’s Earth Month with the NC State Earth Fair, an epic, earth-focused fair with dozens of exhibits, demonstrations and ideas on how you can make the world a better place. The annual NC State signature event held on their famous Brickyard is always one of the highlights for us and our volunteers. Many students expressed interest in getting involved and our volunteers agreed that this was “the best Earth Month event yet.”

One of our personal favorites was the RTP STEM Expo. More than 400 students in grades 5-12 were able to engage in hands-on STEM activities. The theme of this expo revolved around innovation where they brought together 23 demo presenters from RTP and beyond. We brought our Snap Circuit kit providing students with an opportunity to learn about circuits, electricity, wind and hydro power. Watch this fun video and see if you can spot our NC GreenPower team talking to students!

Other events we attended include the State Energy Conference, Lacy Elementary Earth Day, Piedmont Earth Day Fair and Durham Earth Day.

Are you interested in volunteering for NC GreenPower? We operate using a small staff so to help us spread the word about the program, we depend on hundreds of volunteers to provide education and outreach to the public. In any given year, NC GreenPower may receive more than 200 requests to speak at or attend events. Volunteers assist us by staffing nearly half of these, especially during April’s Earth Month and October’s Energy Awareness Month.

If you’d like to get involved with NC GreenPower as well please visit our website to sign up to volunteer and find out more about upcoming events.
