With 2019 in full swing, we’ve had a chance to reflect on the previous year and wanted to share with you some of our highlights.   We celebrated 15 years! 2018 marked 15 years of NC GreenPower working towards a greener North Carolina. We kicked off our celebrations with our #NCGP15Years social media campaign to connect with individuals such as yourselves that have made our work a possibility. We are grateful for the opportunity to grow alongside the sustainable energy sector in North Carolina and are excited to see how the developing industry shapes our work. Featured School – Lake Lure Classical Academy

For this month’s featured school, NC GreenPower chatted with Tom Keever, Executive Director of Lake Lure Classical Academy. Located in Lake Lure, the N.C. school is a K-12 public charter school with a passion for sustainability and experiential education. Bringing on this school was a slew of firsts for NC GreenPower: it was the first school to already have $10,000 in grant funds set aside for a solar installation before applying for our grant, the first to be selected from Rutherford County, and the first applicant whose efforts were student-driven rather than from an educator or administrator. Senior Tanner Riley approached faculty member Ryan Lubbers about applying for the NC GreenPower solar schools grant for his senior project. From the beginning, it has …[ MORE ]

Helping out an Army Veteran with his Solar PV System

Not everything is about profits and the bottom line for all companies. Recently, Yes Solar Solutions and Baker Renewable Energy teamed up with local nonprofit NC GreenPower to help get a wounded Veteran’s solar PV system back on track. In 2005, Army Sergeant Jon Roberts was stationed in Iraq when he was hit head-on by an 18 wheeler on his way from the Baghdad airport to his base and sustained severe brain injuries. After several surgeries, months in a coma and more months recovering in a VA hospital, Jon returned with his parents, Steve and Heidi Roberts, to Waxhaw, North Carolina where their extended family lives. They started plans to build a handicapped accessible home on six acres of family …[ MORE ]

NC GreenPower Tests New Focus on Solar for Schools & Community

(Blog reposted from original story by NC Sustainability Connection) NC GreenPower has announced two new pilot projects that signal a shift in the organization’s focus. After more than a decade of helping to boost the state’s voluntary renewable energy portfolio through production-based incentives, the group is transitioning its direction toward school solar installations and other community impact projects more likely to galvanize contributor support. A Changing Landscape for Renewable Energy Launched in 2003, NC GreenPower is a Raleigh-based non-profit that has supported nearly 1,000 projects across the state, with emphasis on residential solar PV. The first initiative of its kind in the nation, the program pools support from donors who contribute in $4 increments through their utility bill. Only 25 percent of this donation …[ MORE ]
