Lenovo, a global PC technology company based in Research Triangle Park, NC, is one of the state’s leading supporters of North Carolina-based renewable energy generation. Lenovo currently purchases nearly 1 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy from NC GreenPower annually.
Energy generated from Lenovo’s participation in NC GreenPower will help to reduce the use of fossil fuel sources, such as coal, resulting in improvements to air and water quality across the state. This reduction is equivalent to approximately 150,000 trees planted or avoiding 2.5 million miles driven by North Carolina motorists.
“We believe that investing in renewable energy is currently one of the most effective ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, along with conservation and efficiency improvements,” said Fran O’Sullivan, senior vice president, Product Group, Lenovo. “We are focusing on doing all three of these at Lenovo. Supporting renewable energy generation further extends the sustainability practices we’ve integrated throughout our product lines and operations.”
Maggy Inman, vice president and program manager of NC GreenPower, says “As a Champion-level sponsor of our program Lenovo is helping to increase the amount of renewable energy generation in North Carolina. As an innovative, global company, Lenovo is making a local impact in an area where many of its employees live and work.”

Delta Products Corporation added a 30-kilowatt solar photovoltaic (PV) system to its Research Triangle Park office building. The system was switched on in early January and is comprised of 160 Evergreen Solar’s ES-190 / 190W solar panels installed on Sunlink solar panel racks on the building’s rooftop. The panels feed down into 10 solar inverters in the company’s warehouse which are designed and built by its sister company, Delta Energy Systems, in Europe. This system is the largest corporate-owned, roof-mounted solar PV system in the state. On average, it will produce about 36,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity each year – enough to power about three to four typical NC homes and offset approximately 37 tons of carbon dioxide annually. Delta partnered with Triangle-based sustainable energy company Southern Energy Management to engineer, design and install the solar energy system.
While the economic incentives make solar more attractive as a corporate investment, Delta has other reasons to invest in solar power. Renewable power supplies, including inverters and solar panels, are a core part of Delta’s global product line, and switching power components are a primary focus of the company’s engineering R&D lab in RTP.
Delta’s solar energy system is the company’s second in North America, adding to one already generating power in California. The company’s investments in solar power, along with other sustainability efforts, are part of a larger initiative to slow down the impacts of global warming.
