Workshops provide learning opportunities about renewable energy

Interested in learning more about wind, solar, micro-hydro and other renewable energy technologies? Looking for a hands-on experience in how to install and maintain green power technologies? Then you might be interested in one of several comprehensive training opportunities available across the state.

Two of NC GreenPower’s leading partners, the N.C. Solar Center and the N.C. Renewable Energy Initiative, are each offering a series of workshops for professionals and enthusiasts interested in learning more about current renewable energy systems. Topics include basics of electricity, introductory and advanced courses on renewable technologies, how to install and maintain these technologies, understanding the latest economic incentives available, and many other interesting topics.

Each partner organization offers something different for citizens interested in learning more about green power potential in North Carolina and abroad.

    Renewable Energy Technologies Diploma Series

Electrical contractors, building and electrical inspectors, builders and architects, small business owners, land owners, plumbers, HVAC firms and others can find a high level of professional training in the field of renewable energy from the Renewable Energy Technologies Diploma Series.

Students get hands on experience during a diploma series class.

The series, hosted by the N.C. Solar Center and the N.C. State University Office of Professional Development, provides expertise to those interested in specializing in specific technologies such as solar photovoltaic (PV), wind energy generation, solar thermal applications, and alternative fuels production. The program provides the necessary skills and information for those wishing to expand their businesses to include these technologies. In addition, courses offer preparatory classes for certification in PV and wind energy installation by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP).

The program allows students to study along built-in tracks and specialize in specific technologies, or build an inter-disciplinary course that provides a general understanding of the renewable energy industry. To receive a Renewable Energy Technologies Diploma, students must complete 120 hours of required and elective courses. The weekly sessions or equivalent hours do not need to be taken in sequence, but all requirements must be completed within a three-year period.

For more information on upcoming workshops or on obtaining a Renewable Energy Technologies Diploma, visit www.ncsc.ncsu.edu, call 919-513-7769, or email lyra_rakusin@ncsu.edu.

    Renewable Energy Workshop Series

The Western North Carolina Renewable Energy Initiative (WNCREI) is dedicated to introducing the region to clean, affordable and reliable ways to meet everyday energy needs. As a part of that commitment, the WNCREI, which is sponsored by Appalachian State University and the N.C. State Energy Office, is hosting a number of workshops designed to educate and

Workshops provide opportunities for practical learning with real technologies.

empower individuals interested in pursuing wind, solar and micro-hydro technologies to supply their generation needs. Partnering with state and national industry leaders, the series endeavors to provide a comprehensive educational and hands-on experience.

Located in the scenic mountains of Western North Carolina, the series offers introductory classes to renewable energy sources, as well as more advanced workshops on installation of wind, PV and micro-hydro systems and resource assessment. Hands-on wind power experience can be had at the initiative’s Wind Energy Research and Demonstration facility located on Beech Mountain. The site is the only one of its kind in North Carolina and provides education opportunities that are unique to the area.

For more information on workshops available and registration information, visit the Western North Carolina Renewable Energy Initiative website, call 828-262-2933, or email wind@appstate.edu.
