Progress Energy employees grow green power in North Carolina

Progress Energy employees have added another distinction to the electric utility’s participation in NC GreenPower. During 2005, Progress Energy employees pledged more than $3,500 in individual contributions to the NC GreenPower program. Employee totals, combined with corporate matching funds make their participation nearly double the amount required for the program’s Supporter level of sponsorship.

The contributions were made through the Progress Energy Employee Giving Campaign, which is a matching gift program that includes a number of charitable organizations from which employees can elect to support. Because employee contributions through the campaign are eligible for a 50% matching donation from the Progress Energy Foundation, NC GreenPower received nearly $2,000 from that fund in addition to the more than $3,500 given by utility employees.

Combined, the approximately $5,500 pledge will fund the purchase of 137,500 kWh of renewable energy generated in North Carolina and supplied to the state’s electrical grid. This generation will environmentally offset approximately 285,000 pounds of carbon dioxide and is equivalent to planting more than 22,000 trees or 350,000 automobile miles not driven.

The strong support of Progress Energy employees not only will result in significant renewable energy generation in North Carolina, but also underscores the electric utility’s support of NC GreenPower.

“Matching gifts are a great way to make your NC GreenPower participation go further,” said Carl Wilkins, corporate development manager for NC GreenPower. “It’s also a great way to get an employer involved in supporting renewable energy around the state. That benefits everyone.”

Individuals wishing to qualify their NC GreenPower contribution with their company’s matching gift program should contact their employer for more information.

Progress Energy is one of three investor-owned electric utilities statewide participating in the NC GreenPower program. Progress Energy also supports NC GreenPower through marketing and logistical support, renewable energy acquisition and distribution, and through direct financial sponsorship of the program. To date, Progress Energy has nearly 2,600 NC GreenPower customers in its territory, subscribing approximately 4.7 million kWh of renewable energy per year.
