    Cherokee Investment Partners supports
    NC GreenPower

    by Maribeth Weakland

Cherokee Investment Partners has decided to participate in the NC GreenPower program at the Supporter level. The company purchases more than 200 blocks of NC GreenPower each month, annually offsetting more than 500,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, which is environmentally equivalent to planting nearly 40,000 trees.

Cherokee Investment Partners seeks to prevent environmental impairment through sustainable development and the transformation of environmentally-contaminated communities. The company also works to develop brownfields, which are abandoned properties that have been, or are perceived to be, contaminated. It is estimated that there are between 450,000 and one million brownfields in the United States, and for every acre reclaimed, 4.5 acres of green space are saved.

These efforts are similar to NC GreenPower’s mission to give back to the environment and community by promoting sustainable energy practices. Their purchase of renewable energy will help reduce the amount of emissions produced and conserve fossil fuels. For more information on Cherokee Investment Partners, visit www.cherokeefund.com. Union Power Cooperative offers NC GreenPower to members
    by Maribeth Weakland

Union Power Cooperative, formerly Union Electric Membership Corporation, has decided to further its efforts of promoting cleaner energy alternatives by giving their members the option of a monthly donation to NC GreenPower. This makes them the 35th participating utility in the program.

The corporation is the sixth largest electric cooperative in North Carolina, serving more than 57,000 members in Union, Stanly, Cabarrus, Mecklenburg and Rowan counties. Members of Union Power Cooperative own the company, and have the power to elect board members and voice their opinions on pressing issues.

Along with supporting cleaner energy alternatives, Union Power Cooperative works with homeowners to encourage energy efficiency in the home. Trained energy specialists are available to advise members on ways to save energy, with ideas ranging from dramatically altering insulation in homes, to simple changes in lifestyle and habit. There is also a list of ways to save energy on their website, at www.union-power.com. For more information, call Union Power Cooperative’s main office, at 800-922-6840.
