This year, attendees were able to learn more about current NC GreenPower producer sites in the area, including the Buncombe County Landfill, as well as a wind project in Clyde, NC, and several solar projects around the region.
“The citizens of the greater Asheville area, and a large part of Western N.C. for that matter, have been strong supporters of the program,” said NC GreenPower marketing and communication coordinator Jeff Brooks. “Exhibiting in the area gives us the chance to increase support for the program and show existing subscribers the positive things NC GreenPower is doing to make renewable energy generation a reality.”
Renewable alternatives prove popular at OrganicFest
Another very successful regional event is OrganicFest, a street festival dedicated to promoting organic products and a healthier lifestyle. More than 90 vendors lined the streets outside of the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville for the one-day event.
“Interest was very high among attendees who visited our booth,” said Brooks. “Participation rates exceeded our expectations.”
The increased interest in renewable energy may be attributed in part to an increased visibility for these technologies among mainstream consumers. Recent films such as “An Inconvenient Truth” and “Who Killed the Electric Car,” as well as the ever popular “Kilowatt Ours” documentary have helped to raise awareness of alternative energy sources and the need to deploy these technologies for electrical and mobile fuel needs.
Both the SEE Expo and OrganicFest brought not only record numbers of new subscribers to NC GreenPower, but also an ever-increasing number of existing participants.
“This year, more than ever, we noticed how many existing customers stopped by our booth,” Brooks said. “That is very encouraging to see.”
And perhaps reflective of the times and attitude of the public, many existing customers are even increasing their contributions.
“We are getting a great many requests from customers wanting to do more,” he said. “I think they recognize the good we are able to accomplish through their participation. And I think that many of our participants recognize the urgency to do something now – today.”
As it continues its work during Energy Awareness Month in October and on to the end of the year, the NC GreenPower Speakers Bureau furthers the message of renewable energy through presentations across the state. All tolled, the program will present to more than 100 organizations and events this year. Every presentation moves the Bureau closer to its goal of educating every North Carolina citizen about renewable energy and NC GreenPower.
