Duke Energy and Progress Energy provide
funding for program |
| |
North Carolina’s largest investor-owned utilities,
Duke Energy and Progress
Energy, each presented checks for $25,000 to NC GreenPower,
to support the non-profit organization's commitment to encourage
the development of renewable energy sources for the state’s
power supply. The checks were presented at the N.C.
Utilities Commission during a review of NC GreenPower’s
parent company, Advanced
Energy, which was established by and reports to the Commission.
Both utilities have made voluntary contributions to the program
since its start date two years ago.

"We believe in providing energy choices for our customers
in all the neighborhoods we serve across North Carolina,"
said Sandra Meyer, group vice president of Duke Energy’s
customer service, sales and marketing.
"Our focus is on our customers, and our partnership
with NC GreenPower is helping to fulfill our mission to provide
technological innovations to better serve the people and communities
of North Carolina," said Progress Energy President and Chief
Executive Officer Fred Day.
Both electric
utilities have been involved in the development of NC GreenPower
and are members of the program’s Board
of Directors. Before the program became operational two years
ago, both utilities invested hundreds of thousands of dollars
to put in place an infrastructure for receiving voluntary contributions
from their residential and business customers. All contributions
received by participating utilities are forwarded in their entirety
to NC GreenPower.

State Energy Office grant helps to
promote
NC GreenPower |
|
NC GreenPower’s marketing efforts around the state were
given a big boost during recent months thanks to a grant provided
by the State
Energy Office, N.C. Department of Administration.
|
|
|
The $250,000 grant, provided through
the State Energy Office from petroleum violation escrow funds collected
by the U.S.
Department of Energy, was intended to bolster existing marketing
efforts and help to better reach the statewide audience that the
NC GreenPower program serves.
“Marketing a statewide program can be costly, and we try to
always make the best use of our available marketing resources,”
says Jeff Brooks, marketing and communications coordinator for NC
GreenPower. “Grants like this one enable us to augment our
predominantly grassroots approach with a larger, multi-media campaign
that effectively reaches across the state in way that we might not
be able to accomplish otherwise.”
The State Energy Office grant has provided a number of marketing
resources to the NC GreenPower program. Funds have been used to
purchase radio mentions on statewide radio, print advertising in
magazines and trade publications, sponsorship at energy related
events, promotional and display materials, as well as supporting
public exhibitions and speaking events across the state.
The State Energy Office is one of many stakeholders that participated
in the creation of NC GreenPower. They continue to support the efforts
of the program to make renewable energy part of a more diverse energy
supply for North Carolina.
The grant recently expired, but its benefits will continue for months
to come. NC GreenPower is currently applying for several grants
to continue its efforts to market the program statewide to individuals
and businesses interested in helping to improve North Carolina’s
energy, environment and economy.

Come
See us at the S.E.E. Expo
As the summer months arrive, so too does a very important event
for sustainable energy in Western North Carolina. The annual Southern
Energy and Environment (S.E.E.) Expo provides the general public
an opportunity to see and learn about - first hand- the practical
and presently available options for utilizing clean, renewable sources
of energy, protecting our natural environment and working towards
a sustainable economy for the region.
Be sure to visit the NC GreenPower booth. The event will be held
August 26-28, 2004, at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center,
near Asheville.
