The contributions were
made through the Progress Energy Employee Giving Campaign, which
is a matching gift program that includes a number of charitable
organizations from which employees can elect to support.
Because employee contributions through the Campaign are eligible
for a 50% matching donation from the Progress Energy Foundation,
NC GreenPower received approximately $2,000 from that fund in addition
to the $4,000 given by utility employees. Combined, the $6,000 pledge
will fund the purchase of nearly 181,000 kWh of renewable energy
generated in North Carolina and supplied to the state’s electrical
grid. This generation will environmentally
offset more than 375,000 pounds of carbon dioxide and is equivalent
to planting 29,000 trees or 459,000 automobile miles not driven
or 11,000 days not driven.
The strong support of Progress Energy employees not only will result
in significant renewable energy generation in North Carolina, but
also underscores the electric utility’s support of NC GreenPower.
“Managing environmental issues is an important part of our
business every day, and our employees share that commitment,”
said Fred Day, president and CEO of Progress Energy Carolinas. “We
are proud to continue our partnership with NC GreenPower and support
its efforts to improve our state’s environment.”
Progress Energy is one of several companies that include NC GreenPower
in their matching gifts programs.
“Matching gifts are a great way to make your NC GreenPower
participation go further,” said Carl Wilkins, corporate development
manager for NC GreenPower. “It’s also a great way to
get an employer involved in supporting renewable energy around the
state. That benefits everyone.”
Individuals wishing to qualify their NC GreenPower contribution
with their company’s matching gift program should contact
their employer for more information.
Progress Energy is one of three investor-owned electric utilities
statewide participating in the NC GreenPower program. Progress Energy
also supports NC GreenPower through marketing and logistical support,
renewable energy acquisition and distribution, and through direct
financial sponsorship of the program. To date, Progress Energy has
more than 1,750 NC GreenPower customers in its territory, subscribing
nearly 3.5 million kWh of renewable energy per year.
